So, how do we practice peace in our daily lives? We practice peace every day in the peace room, but one story sticks out. One afternoon, two of the peacemakers in the room got into a fight and it did not seem that either one was going to give in. However, after identifying the problem, hearing both sides perspectives and ultimately apologizing, both sides were back to being friends again. When we are willing to stop and listen to each other, it becomes much easier to forgive.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04983456266240196237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-62082710506042957172011-04-15T14:35:00.001-07:002011-04-15T14:45:02.117-07:00Garden at Perry in full swing!
We've started our garden again at Perry! The kids love to get outside and get their hands in the dirt. We've already planted radishes, tomatoes, beans, peas, squash, carrots, spinach, and broccoli! Planting has reminded us where our food comes from, and we'll have fresh and healthy food throughout the summer. It's also nice to have a project that we can return to on a regular basis. Some of the boys have been working with Mr. Jerry to paint new boards for the perimeter of the garden, which will look beautiful once they're done. We've been talking a lot about what it means to keep Mother Earth peaceful and take care of all of her plants!
Annahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02494113373312097362noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-17815268890243176532011-03-29T15:43:00.001-07:002011-03-29T15:44:13.198-07:00Capitol Area Association for Peace Studies Conference<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 54px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNtz35hUC_L5j2bjHPIiYc5r0IKKhjSYx5YQliIZRPCFZY3UyEZ8Rlim2R71OdqhRWchyzGnL1Mu5PzsRmzPt96xkkbEjAOO9m7_nhTbjPx-jXNZFP8BoLshNnkE4vl2VPWhD4ENq2sPWa/s200/caaps-header.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589636393234154050" />
This past Saturday, volunteers Anna, Kendra and Rachel attended and presented at the 24th Annual Capital Area Association for Peace Studies (CAAPS). One of the highlights was seeing Daryn Cambridge, the director of Knowledge and Digital Studies at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict and professor at American University give his keynote address at the conference. He talked about his experience at various peace organizations and different and unique strategies on how to approach peaceful change. One of the most interesting suggestions Cambridge had for lasting peace was the use of humor to make a point. After this we had the chance to view and discuss DC area student’s projects and ideas on peace. For our presentation, we talked about why LFFP is unique among a sea of other after school programs because of its unique emphasis on peace. We also demonstrated LFFP traditions like the peace pledge and check in while we shared our philosophy on teaching peace at an early age. Overall, the conference was a lot of fun and a great way to get LFFP’s name out to a community of students concerned with peace.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04983456266240196237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-62809581485393642782011-03-16T06:20:00.000-07:002011-03-16T06:40:15.390-07:002011 Summer Camps Announced
LFFP is excited to release the 2011 Summer Peace Camp schedule. These percentages dealt with the proportion of children in the world who lack certain resources, such as access to clean water and adequate nutrition. Artist Thalia Doukas taught a great seminar to students on how to make woven valentines out of two pieces of paper. With the help of GWU volunteers Diksha, Mignotae and Rachel, the younger kids decorated their Valentines with stickers, and peace themed cutouts. After a healthy meal, the peace kids put on a spontaneous talent show on the Peace Room stage to express their creativity. We then sang songs together with Rachel playing the guitar. The Valentines Day Party was a great way for new members of the Perry Community to meet each other and for everyone to show their creativity in a peaceful way.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjektEwhl-Z4MBI5uLZ2L4QfbWFLEAmk_6_ruxviocFJSN1Q_nXAG7holxPffHAhmtRp5jAVBUGPAJ23sFjXtYns7pbGGGyGMYWmLoOka8tJYWwkmvHWDmIdqzJAC466nK99y73sLREEYhL/s200/DSC05595.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575154805405391554" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimaX8sa-37_rQSZBX0jgnBR5mpIrC1NHk9AoSMSi6lWfPysHPpadXFDrLENuMw3hMMxF9TSUa-3lK5B0ivE8hFM73kY5ZO78zcXwmeTMpTz4F8eHJQQkUDRAGsXOVf85vfn91E19pXd7NJ/s200/DSC05572.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575154801924220482" />Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04983456266240196237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-71720525074847448862011-02-10T14:40:00.000-08:002011-02-10T14:53:25.044-08:00Family Night<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix_WAPVyQQiE9n5hFD4fDix4wNE8TBeGd0tnTGAMhptNd0daoUeu9QPwiAsWLpA2YYS8Mpwve-kYRGd7g92YSjRPDotH83pRyw-GNN_iZWsBqPLSj0_U8rq1xa_uoLESkEkeSEFKy7Bm4_/s200/DSC05469.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572197692592707378" />

This past Thursday, the Perry community gathered for our monthly Family Night. The main focus of the night was to teach families ways to keep their bodies and their minds healthy for the New Year. To show how families could stay healthy at home, everyone participated in a beginners yoga class to learn about ways to calm the mind and increase flexibility in a low impact way. As a community partner at Perry School, Little Friends For Peace is working at peace starting with oneself and yoga is the perfect outlet for this. It is important to have peace in yourself before you can share peace with others. After yoga, we joined together for a balanced meal of pasta, salad, fruit and vegetables. The night was a lot of fun, and families are now equipped with the tools to continue living a healthy and peaceful lifestyle.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7DQOy6yKvPrlRDMMSxFhi2Z9jVjHXQC4u3Lz22PhkRxV39VNr8HxQt_eCoWKgn5u-tavJoj1hQZORmm881mapnTXMdCizjEzy9e-4vQ71G4rw-x40GGQEKKA0gkaPm6rfoIijlJlACIjp/s200/DSC05464.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572196548649346978" />Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04983456266240196237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-6973760826161251932011-02-04T11:23:00.000-08:002011-02-10T14:52:02.532-08:00Tuesday Peace Club<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD4XjlPu0-HpBOxxs67tALuFPPoD3g0Jb6URDza8wej5u1dNRdfU0ESKNvC8_G5EohHZHSPfDjeSmMUMMpkJ1QZTvnXGP2mOFyVhjP25Vfnu2iFQyeTarOUgnGIgNmPUpVMTxxZDRXmYtn/s200/Tuesday+Club+with+Ariel+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572197412332548050" />

Tuesday Peace Club children made a world of wishes and shared what they thought would be a good gift for the world. Their wishes included food for everyone, peace in the world, no guns, joy, love, health for all, no torture, green earth with no pollution and homes for all.

Tuesday Peace Club started the New Year 2011 by talking about how they can let their light shine in dark places and be the change they want to see in the world. Some lights were love, helping others, picking up trash, solving problems by talking, sharing food with others and becoming friends with children in other countries.

Keeping these ideas in mind will help us stay peaceful throughout the year.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04983456266240196237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-50057115504286920722011-02-04T10:53:00.000-08:002011-02-04T11:10:19.940-08:00Christmas Cooking
Right before Christmas, a group of Georgetown students came to Perry to bake Christmas cookies and make peace cards. In a typical class we have one or two children that will actively be a part of the class, and they tend to be the oldest of the group. The other children, around two years old, will usually stay on the outskirts of our circle but you can tell that they are listening and absorbing the message. So when we found out that this peace class would consist of only the little ones, we were unsure of what to expect. But it turned out to be amazing! Everyone of those little guys participated and they were excited to do so! It was truly a happy and unexpected surprise for us!Little Friends for Peacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10907750903709256259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-33231997130865713582010-12-01T08:04:00.000-08:002010-12-01T09:16:08.494-08:00Monday Medical Students!
<img style="display: block; We started off by filling out leaves and feathers with the things we are thankful for and then we put them on our Tree of Thanks and our turkey. Then we finished off the night by sharing a delicious pre-Thanksgiving meal. It was truly a great time for us to spend with the kids and their families as we prepare for the Holiday!

Little Friends for Peacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10907750903709256259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-55616113373412544812010-11-17T09:11:00.000-08:002010-11-24T10:51:57.810-08:00Potter's House Event!The Sounds of Hope Event at the Potter's House this past Friday was a great success. It was a joy to see friends and make new ones as we all gathered together for delicious food and great music. And wow was the music impressive! There was singing, the playing of instruments, and even story telling and it all left those of us in the audience feeling amazed. It was truly a great event and successful night! Thanks to everyone who came out and helped to support LFFP!Little Friends for Peacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10907750903709256259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-57674915758162019772010-11-11T15:16:00.000-08:002010-11-15T15:34:19.732-08:00Tuesday Peace Club!This past Tuesday for Peace Club the kids got to build some Gratitude Structures. In line with that theme, we have the little "Book of Thanks" that the children can work on. The children began working on these books on Monday and had some great answers including one answer by Brianna in which she said she was thankful for Rosa Parks!
We also made a Tree of Thanks for our Peace room at Perry.It started out as a bare tree, but with each class we will be having the students write or draw what they are thankful for on leaves and then put the leaves onto the tree. At the end we hope to have our tree covered in colorful leaves of thanks!Little Friends for Peacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10907750903709256259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325412890217664618.post-30905833378967783782010-11-01T10:55:00.000-07:002010-11-04T12:07:33.239-07:00Sounds of Hope!Approaching quickly is the Annual "Sounds of Hope" Fundraiser for Little Friends for Peace. They have had lots of fun getting their hands into the dirt at they learn about gardening with Jerry. In the gardens located behind the Perry School as well as in front of it around the Peace Pole, they have gotten to pull weeds, plant flowers, and water them so that they can grow. This activity has been a great way to teach the kids about plants and to get them outside to enjoy the good weather!Little Friends for Peacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10907750903709256259noreply@blogger.com0
